Airports

In terms of airports, San Francisco's airport (SFO) is obviously the closest to, well, San Francisco, and it has a million flights into it.  That should be your first choice.  However, you can often find good bargains flying into the Oakland airport and there is a connection to BART which takes you to downtown San Francisco (and a shuttle wouldn't be too bad, either).  It's also a smaller and easier airport with which to deal.  Additionally, we recommend avoiding the San Jose airport, unless you are visiting the South Bay.  You'd definitely have to rent a car to get up to San Francisco from there..

Airlines

There are tons of carriers that fly into SFO and Oakland.  United has a huge presence there, but most of the main carriers fly there, too.  However, a couple of the bigger discount airlines, Southwest and JetBlue, fly into Oakland and not SFO.  With enough advanced notice, those two airlines can be pretty affordable.

Finding Low Fares

Having done a lot of this flight shopping recently, there is a pretty cool aggregator site called Kayak that actually searches not only other airlines websites, but other aggregator websites, too.  Anyway, most people have their preferred methods of finding tickets, but we thought we try to help out a bit, as well.  We know that traveling for weddings can be expensive, so if we find some cheap fares, we might let you know about them individually.
